 The Historical Bit

The Peterborough-Quorn Line marked a dividing line in agriculture in the state. To the west there was enough rain to grow one crop of grain each year. To the east the rainfall was insufficient and the land was only suitable for grazing. The grain facilities on the line were at Peterborough, Orroroo and Quorn. Grain traffic was seasonal and often dictated by demand with grain trains often running only between Peterborough and Orroroo.

By 1970 all steam hauled services had been replaced by an 830 class diesel. The last revenue trains ran from Peterborough to Orroroo in October 1988 to clear the grain silos before the line was closed.

Each location in the layout has a detailed set of track diagrams that provide a variety of useful information

The  Getting Started  guide below gives a summary of what is available.

To display this information click any Location Index graphic, or go to the bottom of the page for all the session links (all links will open in this window).
Getting Started:
  1. If you have already closed the opening message window then the first step is to pause the session by pressing the  P  key.
  2. Next locate your loco. Either:-
    • Open the Finder Tool (press  Ctrl   F ) and type, in the Name field, the name of the selected loco - e.g. SAR 858. Click the tick icon, OR
    • Open the Driver List (bottom left of the screen) and then scroll through the list to find either:-
    • the loco name (SAR 858) OR
    • the driver icon (named Driver 858) - this is a non-animated icon
then click the drivers Eye icon Driver Eye.png to take control of the loco
  3. Take a few moments to get your bearings. Click Peterborough Data (this link will open in this window) to show the location details and track plans for Peterborough. In each location details page:-
    • the Tab HM White.png tab gives an overall summary of each location with a "potted" history (where available).
    • the Tab TM Grey.png tab reveals the invisible TM Track Marks for Drive To commands.
    • the Tab IN Grey.png tab lists all active industries and their commodities.
    • the Tab SW Grey.png tab describes the names, locations and settings of all junction switches as well as some switch sets you may want to use.
  4. Each location details page has direct links to the adjacent locations so you can explore along the route.
  5. When you are ready to start, reload the Peterborough Base Session page (click the Scenarios button on your current location page) and select this Scenario again or just use the Back button on your browser - whichever is quicker.
  6. Switch back to Trainz Driver Mode
  7. Close the opening message window and, if Pause is shown on the screen, press the  P  key to start the session.

Orders:

At Peterborough:-

  1. Move your selected loco onto the Peterborough  Grain & Flour Mill Siding and couple to the WHE wagons stored there
  2. Shunt the consist into the yard and attach a guard van to the rear
  3. Move the train onto the Peterborough-Quorn Line and proceed to Orroroo or Quorn according to the timetable

At Orroroo:-

  1. move the train onto the  Goods  road to the  Grain Silos  for loading. Notes:
    • stop the WHE wagons and Guard Van so that they are clear off the  Goods Crane
    • the WHE wagons are not industry enabled and will not actually load but because they are covered this issue will not be noticeable
  2. Run the loco around the train to attach to the Guard Van at its rear
  3. Detach the Guard Van from the WHE wagons and shunt the van onto the  Goods Loop . Position it alongside the Goods Shed
  4. Turn the loco on the  WYE . Notes:
    • The  WYE  was actually removed in the 1930s so in reality the loco would have to run "tender first" (or "long nose first" in the case of a diesel) back to Peterborough - which was not popular with the train crews but is an option you can use
  5. Coal and water (if needed) at the Orroroo  Loco Coal & Water  Stage.
  6. Attach the loco to the southern (Peterborough) end of the WHE wagons at the  Grain Silos .
  7. Shunt the train onto the  Goods Loop  and couple it to the Guard Van

At Quorn:-

  1. move the train onto a vacant yard road and detach the guard van
  2. shunt the WHE wagons onto the Grain Siding to the solos. The WHE wagons are not industry enabled and will not actually load but because they are covered this issue will not be noticeable
  3. return the wagons to the yard road
  4. shunt the guard van to the opposite end of the consist
  5. take the loco to the 'Depot to coal and water (if appliciable) and to turn on the turntable
  6. when ready to depart couple the loco to the Peterborough end of the consist

From both Quorn and Orroroo:-

  1. Proceed onto the main line to Peterborough according to the timetable. From Quorn stopping aa required to coal and water as necessary
  2. at Peterborough proceed to a vacant  Yard  road
  3. Run the loco around the train and attach to the Guard Van at its rear
  4. Shunt the Guard Van onto a vacant road in the  Car Shed
  5. Reattach to the WHE wagons and shunt the train to the Peterborough  Grain & Flour Mill  Siding
  6. Detach the loco and return it to the Main  Loco  Depot
