The Historical Bit
The Peterborough-Quorn Line marked a dividing line in agriculture in the state. To the west there was enough rain to grow one crop of grain each year. To the east the rainfall was insufficient and the land was only suitable for grazing. The grain facilities on the line were at Peterborough, Orroroo and Quorn. Grain traffic was seasonal and often dictated by demand with grain trains often running only between Peterborough and Orroroo. By 1970 all steam hauled services had been replaced by an 830 class diesel. The last revenue trains ran from Peterborough to Orroroo to clear the grain silos before the line was closed in October 1988. |
