 The Historical Bit 

In 1956 the narrow gauge line from Port Augusta to Maree via Quorn was closed, replaced by a new standard gauge line build further to the west. But the short section between Quorn and Summit, the highest point on the line, still remained open. In the other direction, the line from Quorn to Hawker was still used by a weekly freight service.

From 1956 upto 1972 tourist excursion trains from Peterborough would often use these two sections of the original line. From Quorn to Summit the trains would "top and tail" with a locomotive placed at each end as there were no turning facilities at Summit. The Hawker trains would turn the loco on the WYE at Hawker.

In 1972 the fine from Quorn to Hawker closed but the line to Summit remained in use.

In 1974 the Pichi Richi Railway Historical Society was formed to preserve the existing track and ultimately restore the old right of way as a working preservation railway. They initially ran services on the line between Quorn and Summit.

By 1979 they had restored the line from Summit to Woolshed Flat, using track from the closed line to Hawker. At Woolshed Flat they build some tourist facilities and installed a turning WYE.

In 1987 the line to Peterborough was closed so the tour trains from Peterborough no longer ran.

By 2001 the Pichi Richi Railway had restored the entire original line to Port Augusta. They now operate tourist trains from Port Augusta to Quorn as well as between Quorn and Woolshed Flat.

This scenario recreates some of the tour trips from Quorn to Summit, Hawker, Woolshed Flat that were typical of different periods in the history of the line. You can choose between the individual trips or combine them into longer excursions.

Getting Started:
  1. Open the session SAR Northern Division Free Roam Session V2 into Trainz Driver. To do this:
    • From the Driver/Surveyor loading screen select the route SAR Northern Division (Narrow Gauge) Route v2
    • Then select VIEW SESSIONS
    • Then select the session SAR Northern Division Free Roam Session V2
    • Click DRIVE SESSION
  2. If you have already closed the opening message window then pause the session by pressing the  P  key.
  3. If you decide to set the session clock to a different starting time then follow the instructions shown in the Orders section
  4. Next locate your loco. Either:-
    • Open the Finder Tool (press  Ctrl   F ) and type, in the Name field, the name of the loco, such as SAR T 51 (or just T 51 should be enough), then click the tick icon, OR
    • Open the Driver List (bottom left of the screen) and then scroll through the list to find either:-
    • the loco name (e.g. SAR T 51) OR
    • the driver icon (named Driver 51) - this is a non-animated icon
    then click the drivers Eye icon Driver Eye.png to take control of the loco.
  5. Take a few moments to get your bearings. Click Quorn Data (this link will open in this window) to show the location details and track plans for Quorn. In each location details page:-
    • the Tab HM White.png tab gives an overall summary of each location with a "potted" history (where available).
    • the Tab TM Grey.png tab reveals the invisible TM Track Marks for Drive To commands.
    • the Tab IN Grey.png tab lists all active industries and their commodities.
    • the Tab SW Grey.png tab describes the names, locations and settings of all junction switches as well as some switch sets you may want to use.
  6. Each location details page has direct links to the adjacent locations so you can explore along the route.
  7. When you are ready to start, reload the Peterborough Base Session page (click the Scenarios button on your current location page) and select this Scenario again or just use the Back button on your browser - whichever is quicker.
  8. Switch back to Trainz Driver Mode
  9. Close the opening message window if it is on the screen OR if Pause is shown on the screen instead, press the  P  key. Both actions will start the session.

Orders:

For both the Summit and Hawker options:

  1. Select either locomotive SAR T 44 or SAR T 51 and attach it to one of the two passenger consists waiting in the  Car Shed  in the Quorn  Loco Depot 
  2. Drive the train into Quorn  Station  and load the waiting tour passengers.

For the Quorn to Summit option:

  1. Switch to loco SAR T 255 located in the Quorn  Loco Depot  and couple it to the rear passenger car of the consist now waiting at the station.
  2. Drive to Summit (there is a trackmark at Summit Halt Up that can be used for the AI).
  3. After a suitable period to allow the passengers to "explore" (there is nothing to see at Summit) switch to the rear loco (SAR T 44 or SAR T 51) to return to Quorn station.
  • If you are continuing onto Hawker then detach loco SAR T 255 and return it to the Quorn  Loco Depot 
  • If you are terminating at Quorn then return the locos and consist to the Quorn  Loco Depot  and  Car Shed 

For the Quorn to Hawker option:

  1. Drive to Hawker Station. Optional stops can be made at any of the locations along the line but they have no passenger facilities.
  2. At Hawker station, while the passengers are enjoying lunch at the Railway Hotel, shunt the carriages to the main line so that the loco can access the coal and water stages.
  3. Coal and water the loco then turn it on the WYE.
  4. Attach the loco to the Quorn end of the consist and shunt it back to the station.
  5. Drive back to Quorn Station and unload the passengers.
  6. Return the loco and consist to the Quorn  Loco Depot 

For the Quorn to Woolshed Flat option:

  1. Select locomotive SAR T 255 and attach it to one of the two passenger consists waiting in the  Car Shed  in the Quorn  Loco Depot  - as an alternative you can use SAR SMC 1 located at the  Quorn Station Car Shed . See the scenario The "Coffee Pot" Special for the running details
  2. Drive the train into Quorn  Station  and load the waiting tour passengers.
  3. Run the loco around the train
  4. Drive to Summit for a short stop
  5. Drive to Woolshed Flat Main Platform and unload the passengers
  6. Turn the loco on the WYE taking on any water if required. Passengers can have refreshments at the Pichi Richi Railway cafeteria
  7. Attach the loco to the Quorn end of the consist
  8. Drive non-stop to Quorn  Station  to unload passengers.
  • If you are terminating at Quorn then return the loco and consist to the Quorn  Loco Depot  and  Car Shed

  • The line to Woolshed Flat is not signalled beyond Quorn Yard. Train Order Working is in operation on both the Woolshed Flat and Hawker lines.
  • You have been issued with orders and the authorisation for travel from Quorn to Woolshed Flat/Hawker and return.
  • The approaches to all locations are protected by invisible signals to prevent the AI Half Speed Slowdown Problem when approaching a signal at stop.
  • Trackmarks and industries have been provided for AI Drive To Trackmark, Drive via Trackmark and Drive to  Industry  commands. Click Location Index for details.
  • Manual (no AI) driving is possible. As a visual driving aid, a Caution warning sign has been placed at the location of the Main Approach Dn and Main Approach Up trackmarks. Click Location Index for details.
  • If driving manually in yards, you are responsible for correctly setting any catch points.
